Vitro Fertilization Increase Risk of Uterus Cancer IVF or in vitro fertilization (IVF) is often a viable alternative for infertile couples who want to cuddle baby. However, there is a danger behind the procedure fertilization outside the human body.
Netherlands Cancer Institute scientists have discovered that women who perform artificial insemination at risk of ovarian cancer two times higher than those who did conception naturally. This is because IVF procedures force the ovary to produce more eggs than women who produce normally.
Their research also revealed that ovarian stimulation increases the risk four times that gradually get
closer to the threshold of 'ovarian tumors'.
This conclusion drawn from analyzing data on more than 19,000 women who have fertility treatment, and 6,000 women who did not undergo IVF treatment.
Of the 61 women with malignant ovarian tumors in the group of IVF treatment, 31 of which were borderline ovarian cancer, and 30 others suffered from invasive cancer.
Lead researcher Professor Flora van Leeuwen said, "This study is the first to include a comparison group of women who did not undergo IVF.
"Our data clearly show that ovarian stimulation for IVF was associated with an increased risk of ovarian tumors which remained high up to more than 15 years after the first cycle of treatment," he said as quoted by the Daily Mail.
Published in the journal Human Reproduction, the study was described as 'findings' even though the woman involved is still very little. Prof. van Leeuwen said it would examine in a comprehensive 8800 women to draw more specific conclusions.
Dr Claire Knight, of Cancer Research UK, added: "This interesting study because it indicates a possible link between ovarian stimulation for IVF and ovarian tumors. But it is not clear that IVF causes of invasive ovarian cancer."
In order to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer, Dr. Knight suggested that women do not smoke, maintain weight and a balanced diet.
